What does 3 Moore’s Law mean to your practice? It’s simple. If you are not using this technology in your practice you are missing out on harnessing an exponential driving force that is fuelling growth across the planet.
In 1965, Gordon Moore (co-founder of IBM) wrote a paper where he noted that the density and performance of electronic devices had doubled approximately every 2 years from 1958 through to 1965. He predicted that this trend would continue “for at least ten years”.
Ten years later, there was no sign that this increase in hardware performance had slowed down and others predicted it would continue “for at least ten more years”.
Well, it’s now 46 years later and the trend has shown no sign of slowing down. The capabilities of digital electronic devices are still doubling about every 2 years – processing speed, memory capacity, sensors, pixels.
In fact, it’s reasonable to say that Moore’s Law describes one of the key driving forces of technological and social change in the world today.
The Three Principles of Right Technology
Let’s look at how The Three Principles of Right Technology work together.
Principle 1: Pareto’s 80:20 rule – 80% of your results come from 20% of your actions. I talked about how to use this principle to ensure you and your team put your time where it really counts.
Principle 2: Pilzer’s Wealth Formula – W = R x T or wealth equals resources times technology used to leverage technology. Resources means your office, staff, electricity and data. Technology means any tools, techniques, systems or methods of organization you use to apply your resources.
Principle 3: Moore’s Law – computing hardware is doubling in performance every 2 years.
Use 1 and 2 together to cut unimportant tasks and to start using technology to leverage the important stuff so you get the most out of your resources.
Moore’s Law tells us that the technology that is showing the greatest rate of growth and which has the greatest ability to leverage our resources is computers. No other technology on the planet is currently showing the same kind of sustained growth. If you are not using computers correctly in your practice, then you are simply missing out on the most powerful leveraging technology on the planet today.
So adding principle 3 to 1 and 2 gives you an exponential driving force in your 80:20-focused wealth formula. Powerful stuff.
But it does need to be ‘correct’ use of computers. If you use them wildly for everything, you are not applying the 80:20 rule and may well even find they create more work for you! In fact, one of the key problems we see when practices introduce Spinalogic results from exactly that. Spinalogic automates an enormous amount of the work of your CA and this leaves a vacuum in your CA’s day as they no longer need to manage payments and appointments like they used to. And nature abhors a vacuum – it’s just natural that people find things to fill that vacuum with. If you are not careful, that can be useless inefficient busy-ness.
The Three-Step Process to Introducing Tech
So pay attention as you introduce technology. It’s a three step process.
First, be careful that you are only doing the things that need to be done in the first place! Don’t throw technology at unnecessary processes and useless tasks. Sure it may make them more efficient, but who wants to be more efficient at something that is useless?
Second, get the technology that will let you automate, streamline or improve standards for those important things. Look for suppliers who have actually studied where time is spent in a chiropractic office and how to automate processes to save this time
Finally, as you do this, watch what your team is doing and make sure that now they are not so busy with admin, that they don’t just create more admin busy-ness. It’s such an easy trap to fall into. Check that you and your team know what they should do when they are not busy – whether it is planning for a new patient event or studying chiropractic or sending postcards to patients.
Wash, rinse and repeat.
With the correct use of the Three Principles of Right Technology, you and your team will have much more time to spend on future-looking activities that allow you to build your vision instead of on backward-looking administrative tasks.
